Kate Burford

Fellow (FwSS)

I began studying Shiatsu in 1989 at The British School of Shiatsu-Do in London and have earnt my living from Shiatsu ever since graduating three years later. I love that my work is not only enjoyable but also something that has a meaningful impact on people’s lives.  Although my hands know what they are doing I also feel I know so little which brings the satisfaction of every shiatsu being unique and the lifelong path of studentship and constant learning is a joy. I am currently studying Aroma Point Therapy (using pure Essential Oils on the acupressure points) with Tiffany Carole Pollard. I have been teaching Shiatsu since 2004 at The British School of SHiatsu-Do  and currently teach in my local community, online, nationally and internationally. I have worked quite extensively with women’s health and a current area of work is supporting women with Shiatsu to ease the challenges that can arise during the menopausal phases. I welcome people to my practice regardless of their gender, race, ability, religion and sexuality. I wish to create safety for those who work with me because learning and healing will occur in those safe spaces. I acknowledge my own background of racial and socioeconomic privilege and regularly check in with my unconscious bias. I receive regular supervision and am also reflective about my practice and enjoy plenty of peer support. If you wish to have a conversation with me around these issues I am always willing to do that. FwSS, DipBSS, BA Hons I am a Certified Institute of Integrative Nutrition Health Coach I have previously been an Assessor for The Shiatsu Society UK, Chair of The Assessment Board and a Newsletter Editor.

Surprisingly simple questions and deeply relaxing touch: a trauma-informed way to stay healthy, resolve inner conflicts and find the solutions that you need.   For full details: www.nickpole.com   I have been practising, teaching and writing about shiatsu for twenty years, and I am fully insured and registered as a practitioner and teacher with the Shiatsu Society UK. In 2012 I studied Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy at the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and integrate the clinically-proven benefits of mindfulness into my work with Shiatsu and Clean Language.   For more, see my book: 'Words That Touch - How to ask questions your body can answer' (Singing Dragon, 2017)

I am a Shiatsu and Acupuncture Practitioner working mainly in the Portsmouth and Southampton area. Having gained the Further and Adult Education Teachers Certificate, I taught Shiatsu and Oriental Medicine to adult learners. My clientele are mainly individuals seeking treatment for a variety of health issues. However, I also engage in work for corporate clients. These have included an international company, a national festival theatre and several recruitment consultancies, treating members of their staff. I also worked with a charitable organisation over a period of five years providing treatment for their clients. Thankfully I received very positive feedback from all. Judy Talbot

Fellow (FwSS)

Judy Talbot has been a member of the Shiatsu Society since October 2000 I began my journey into Shiatsu back in 1999 when I trained at the Ki Kai Shiatsu Centre in London. I subsequently qualified and became a member of the Shiatsu Society. I am also a qualified Tui Na (Chinese deep tissue massage) practitioner with a specialism in Sports Rehabilitation. Together with this therapy and having studied Reiki I and II, I like to incorporate this knowledge and these techniques within my treatments. Most recently I have explored and developed spiritual healing which have enhanced my energetic connections on many levels. Meditation and yoga are a regular practice which enable my treatments to be more intuitive and focused on a deep, energetic level. My working experiences have included most recently within a Women's Well-being Clinic. I have also experience in working in a Mental Health clinic within a Crisis unit and a Drug/alcohol Rehabilitation centre. I have lived in the beautiful South Hams and Plymouth now for many years and enjoy all the wonderful things it has to offer from beaches, moor to vibrant communities. I am a registered member of the Shiatsu Society (MRSS) which is the main regulatory body for Shiatsu in the UK and hold a diploma in Tui Na (ITEC).

Lisa Snelling

Fellow (FwSS)

Lisa Snelling has been a member of the Shiatsu Society since December 2002.  She qualified in 2005 and works near her home in Sheffield for a local charity and also in her private clinic which she co-runs with two colleagues.  In addition to her shiatsu work, Lisa is also an academic and has a background in health services research and she completed a PhD in health psychology looking at the effect of the treating practitioner in the delivery of shiatsu to people with multiple sclerosis.  She is keen to include anyone who has an interest in accessing or indeed learning the art and providing shiatsu professionally or to friends and family. In her words:   I work with any condition or issue.  I have the privilege of being one of  a team of therapists who provide support through shiatsu treatments to people whose lives are affected by cancer at a Sheffield charity, Cavendish Cancer Care.  Treatments are available at the cancer headquarters on Wilkinson Street in Sheffield and I also work on the hospital wards at the Weston Park Cancer Centre.  I have worked here for the last 11 years and also co-run and provide shiatsu from 4 Good Health Clinic in Nether Edge Sheffield.   I do offer home treatments but limit this to people who are paralysed or non-ambulatory.  These tend to be people with Motor Neurone Disease but also those with Multiple Sclerosis. In addition to providing shiatsu treatments, I am the course director for a career enhancing portfolio of Masters programmes for Shiatsu practitioners, acupuncturists and nutrition therapists at the Northern College of Acupuncture, York.  I am actively involved in research through supervision of Masters dissertations, writing up my own research in the field of shiatsu for which I was awarded a PhD in 2020.
