Shiatsu Practitioner and Chi Gung Teacher, Edinburgh
My book, Death and Loss in Shiatsu Practice, a guide to holistic bodywork in palliative care, was published by Singing Dragon in 2020. I welcome those who are grieving, facing death or managing loss.
I have been practicing Zen Shiatsu in Edinburgh for 30 years, specialising in palliative care, Shiatsu with those facing terminal diagnoses or are grieving, baby, child and pregnancy Shiatsu, and have extensive experience in many other fields.
I am the author of Death and Loss in Shiatsu Practice, a guide to holistic bodywork in palliative care published by Singing Dragon in 2020.
I was Principal Teacher and Co-Founder of The Shiatsu School Edinburgh for 20 years. I have also taught Zen Shiatsu, Baby Shiatsu and Death and Loss in Shiatsu Practice at the European Shiatsu Congress, and been the visiting guest teacher in Oslo, Paris, Athens, and London.
My initial training was with Elaine Liechti at the Glasgow School of Shiatsu. Subsequent CPD workshops included pregnancy Shiatsu and Extraordinary Meridians with Suzanne Yates; Zen Shiatsu with Carola Beresford-Cooke; Nicola Pooley, Dinah John, Laura Davison, Cliff Andrews and many more; Movement Shiatsu with Bill Palmer; Barefoot Shiatsu with various tutors, Clean Language with Nick Pole.
I have been a membe of the Shiatsu Society (UK) since I graduated in 1992, attained MRSS in 1995, was Chair of the Society, and have been a Journal editor. I have also written numerous articles for the Journal.
I offer concessions for one-to-one Shiatsu, introductory and advanced as well as 'Prepare-for-birth with Shiatsu' classes for individuals and couples. I have been a supervisor for many years and offer Supervision training and group sessions online and in-person. I am an experienced chi gung teacher (in-person and online), host Death Cafes, Grief Circles, and Tea Ceremony.
In a Shiatsu session I will listen to you telling me about yourself and how you are. I use Clean Language (a way of engaging with someone to support them in connecting with their need and instinctive self-knowledge). Depending on your constitution and general energy levels, I would then use a variety of touch which might include gentle holding, using my palms, thumbs and fingers, perhaps elbows, knees and feet on the acupressure points and meridians. I can incorporate subtle movements to stretch and promote a sense of balance and wellbeing. Feedback, questions, stillness and / or quiet are all encouraged - whichever is best for you on that day. Where appropriate, there can be a counselling aspect to support the bodywork, and recommendations can be made regarding diet and exercise to aid self-care and prolong the benefits between sessions.
