Total fee £63.90

Enhanced DBS checks are the highest level of check available in the UK and are generally required for roles involving working with vulnerable groups.

What does an Enhanced DBS check show?

An enhanced DBS check will show details of any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings recorded on the Police National Computer (PNC), plus a check of the records held by the local police force where an applicant has resided*. An additional check of the barred list can be requested for individuals who are working or volunteering in regulated activity with children and/or vulnerable adults.

The information disclosed on an individual’s certificate is also subject to the DBS filtering rules which removes old and minor conviction information, within set time-frames.

It's good to allow a couple of weeks for this check to take place.

Basic DBS checks

A basic DBS check is a type of criminal record check that contains details of all unspent convictions only. In other words, it includes conviction information that has not yet reached an age where it is removed from an active record. This level of check is available for anyone working in England or Wales. A basic disclosure check can be requested by any organisation wishing to complete their due diligence on employees or volunteers. Furthermore, basic criminal record check can be requested on all roles and is not limited to any industry or sector like standard checks or enhanced checks

Request a basic DBS check

Apply for a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to get a copy of your criminal record. This is called ‘basic disclosure’. It costs £18. It’s available for people working in England and Wales.

There’s a different way to apply if you’re applying for a job in Northern Ireland or applying for a job in Scotland.

The check will only show convictions that are not ‘spent’, for example some types of caution will disappear after 3 months.

It usually takes up to 14 days for you to receive your certificate.

You must be 16 or over to apply.
