Practitioner in Focus: Cathy Nixon

Being a Zen Shiatsu practitioner and Acupuncturist in Rugby has allowed me the privilege to support those in their individual journey for health, wellbeing, and injury recovery whilst providing a safe and welcoming space.

Using a blend of Shiatsu with both Acupuncture and Qigong allows me to meet the wide range of differing needs people have when coming for treatments. Thus enabling me to provide a tailor made treatment plan to get them to where they need to be.

I was drawn to Shiatsu, Acupressure and Acupuncture from a long term interest in studying body mechanics and the body’s ability to heal itself. I have been running Shiatsu and Acupressure treatments for 7 years and specialising with symptom management for Autoimmune conditions, Fibromyalgia, ME and long term pain, joint and connective tissue conditions. Most of this was from a studio based in St Leonards on Sea until I relocated to Rugby around 4 years ago and restarting my practice from here. I love having the new addition of Acupuncture to enable me to have more tools available to tailor treatments with both a TCM approach and from a Zen Shiatsu approach, I have looked to further this by booking some Aricular Acupuncture courses, later in the year, to allow for combinations of Shiatsu and Acupuncture to work in duality to optimise the benefits of both.

My Journey started from training Wing Chun from 9 years old under various instructors and currently with Sifu Russ Benham of the Wing Chun Organisation where I achieved 2nd Technician grade April of 2024. Having been around martial arts for so long, the body mechanics and dynamics have been of great interest to me. This was furthered by my Tai Chi teacher, Martin Sayer, when I was 16 who encouraged me to pursue Shiatsu which I completed the diploma for in 2017.

This was under the teachings and guidance of Annie Cryar, who has been an incredible asset to both the Shiatsu college, and the Shiatsu Society. She's brought a great wealth of technical study and encouraged curiosity to the holistic practice. Another one of the wonderful teachers I had great enjoyment studying under was Rose Fuhrman, who brought the depth of scientific background and deep questioning, allowing the scrutiny of all listed sources in each scientific study to ensure integrity of practice.

I hope my work can bring research backed evidence further to the forefront, continuing Rose's great work. Until the pandemic, I was regularly travelling back to Hastings to assist with the Shiatsu college weekends to keep my knowledge relevant and to help further the reach of Shiatsu.

In 2018 I travelled to China for 3 weeks to study Tai Chi and Qigong and TCM at Long Tou Shan Tai Chi School, receiving a series of Acupuncture treatments which greatly helped some previous injuries and furthering the interest of TCM in practical applications.

In 2020 I qualified as a Qigong Instructor under Annie Cryar and Catherine Burnett and provide private and group lessons teaching Qigong.

In 2024 I qualified as a Clinical Acupuncturist with 96% score on the written exam and am Rugby Borough Council licenced for Acupuncture and Electro Acupuncture, offering treatments in Bilton Rugby.

I am a FHT Registered Therapist, Shiatsu Society member, and an Acupuncture-Acutherapy Council – AcuC member and is fully insured and certified.
