The Shiatsu Society
Established in 1981, the Shiatsu Society is the UK's leading professional Shiatsu organisation. Shiatsu is a unique stand-alone complementary therapy which supports health and well being. We are committed to the spirit and ethos of Shiatsu and the development of integrated and accessible healthcare.
The Shiatsu Society, part of the European Shiatsu Federation, was set up by a small group of Shiatsu practitioners and teachers. Since then the Society has grown to form a network linking interested individuals, students, practitioners and teachers, and fulfils the role of the Professional Association for Shiatsu Practitioners. Currently, there are nearly 1,300 members of whom a third are on the Register of Professional Practitioners of the Shiatsu Society (MRSS).
What we do
We provide our members with a wide range of services to support and facilitate their practice. We also act for the Shiatsu profession as a whole. We are committed to the spirit and ethos of Shiatsu and the development of integrated and accessible health care. The nature and purpose of the Shiatsu Society has always been to promote and facilitate communication between our members and to educate the public about Shiatsu. Our aim is to link all those with an interest in Shiatsu, regardless of philosophy, level of knowledge, approach or style of practice.
- expanding awareness of Shiatsu and how it works
- representing the interests of fully qualified Shiatsu practitioners
- establishing and maintaining the highest professional standards of practice for Shiatsu in the UK
- overseeing and accrediting Shiatsu education to ensure excellence in training
- funding evidence-based clinical research on the benefits of Shiatsu
- promoting evidence-based research to the public, the media and other healthcare providers
- working with the Department of Health towards the statutory regulation of Shiatsu in the UK
- promoting integrated healthcare and contributing to the development of national healthcare policy
The Shiatsu Society Journal
The nature and purpose of the Shiatsu Society has always been to promote and facilitate communication between our members and to educate the public about Shiatsu. Our aim is to link all those with an interest in Shiatsu, regardless of philosophy, level of knowledge, approach or style of practice. To this end we publish a quarterly journal, The Shiatsu Society Journal. A readership subscription is available for non members of the Society who wish to receive the Journal.
