To the Shiatsu Society - Shiatsu Success Story (Alzheimers)

I would like Shiatsu Society to have this story as it could help other Alzheimers sufferers to have the chance to improve, just as my husband has. Alzheimers is a terrible condition, not only for the person concerned but also for the families of those people, who watch them steadily go down hill. It is devastating.

My husband has suffered with Alzheimers for some years now. Last July, our local newspaper printed a story about a story about a group of people from the Nottingham Schoold of Shiatsu (Tracy Footit, Rakesh Verma and Yvette Sinclair-France) who gave free Shiatsu at a Mind Body Spirit Fayre, so that people could try it. We had tried everything to help my husband, but nothing worked and I watched him become more and more depressed about his condition. For years he would not speak to people, as he stumbled over his words and felt embarrassed. His eyes looked dead, he withdrew into a little world of his own and was understandably depressed. He also had difficulty with movement.

I wondered if Shiatsu would help him. I found out that one of the people (Yvette)who had given Shiatsu at the event lives in this area. We booked immediately. She told me that she could not claim that Shiatsu could relieve Alzheimers but was willing to see him.

My husband had Shiatsu and the effect was instant! I sat with him during the session and was amazed, as I watched him relax for the first time in years. His eyes looked alive afterwards and he was smiling. Over the months of having regular Shiatsu his speech has improved and now he speaks to total strangers - a thing he would never have done before - he is so much improved that he has been cracking jokes with the family and laughing - its so good to see it.!

He is now able to move his limbs with far more control and a few weeks ago he got up and danced with me. Not only that, but because he is so much better we went on holiday a few weeks ago for the first time in ages. This is something that was not possible before.

I have no idea if Shiatsu would work on everyone but its worth a try. Because of Shiatsu, I now have my husband back. Not cured of course but more like his old self that I could ever have imagined was possible.

From the Stirling Health & Well-being Alliance (March 2006)

'To whom it may concern:

This letter of reference is to confirm that Tim Mason was a volunteer with the Stirling Health and Well Being Alliance from January to February 2006 with a group of older men in on eof the regeneration areas in Stirling. Tim succesfully introduced this client group to a new experience, enabling them to participate in massage/bodywork. We would happily welcome Tim back to the Organisation and local communities at any time in the future'

From Airthrey Park Medical Centre (March 2006)

'To whom it may concern:

Following the shiatsu sessons with staff at the Medical Centre it was decided to follow up with an evaluation form. The questions ranged fromhow people felt about the practitioner as well as how they felt during and after the session and whether they would like another sessiona nd recommend to a friend.

The results were 100% positive and the main feeling recorded during the session was 'relaxed' and after; relaxed, refreshed and sleepy.

Eberyone wanted a repeat session in the futre and everyone would recommend to a friend ---------- a few said that they were not sure what to expect, but all had confidence in the practitioner'

From 'Gordon' (who Tim met after a demo. to the Stirlingshire MS Society)

'I was a bit dubious about the benefits of shiatsu at first, having tried other complimentary therapies with a variety of results. My first appointment with Tim was very detailed, with him checking my medical history before carrying out a diagnosis and carrying out a treatment session according to this. The treatments have been very beneficial, giving relief from a lot of aches and pains and leaving a large “feel good factor”. Tim is obviously very talented in this field and always explains what he is doing, also giving advice on self help techniques. I would recommend shiatsu and Tim whole heartedly to anyone considering a possible alternative therapy.'

From Dr. M

'I went to Tim Mason when he first started training as a shiatsu practitioner so I have witnessed and benefited from the development of his skills and understanding of the human body.

In the beginning I was under a lot of pressure, at work and in my personal life, finding a new sense of self and role in life and moving house. I also worked very hard, often sitting at a computer for long hours. Overall I was often tense and taut emotionally and physically, so I welcomed any form of massage not least for the human contact!

I had a shiatsu session every 2 – 3 weeks and came to really miss the sessions when the intervals were longer. They were beneficial in providing an oasis of quiet stillness. The practice focussed insistent pressure and kneading movements on clothed points throughout the body, relieving tension and aching.  Sometimes I drifted into a deep, sleeplike state, without my thoughts intruding on the calm, though sometimes it was hard for me to achieve this, at certain times of day or due to pressure of external circumstances.

Over three years later, I am still having and enjoying regular sessions which I find very effective. I find Tim both professional and intuitive in finding the best focus for each session.'

From James

Suffering from a shoulder impingement which caused me considerable discomfort in carrying out everyday tasks such as putting my jacket on i decided to investigate whether shiatsu massage would be beneficial alleviating the condition. My first session with Tim consisted of an investigation of the problem which was followed by a clear explanation of what shiatsu involved and what i could expect from the treatment. He also established whether i had any underlying health problems. In total i attended three sessions which i found very relaxing and by the end of the final session i found that mobility in my shoulder had improved considerably and i was able to resume swimming again , something i had not been able to do for about six months. Overall i found that the treatment worked for me and would have no hesitation in recommending Tim;s services to anyone else.
