Organisational Structure
The Shiatsu Society UK was founded in the early 1980's
to share information amongst a scattering of pioneering
practitioners, increase awareness of the existence of Shiatsu and establish
levels of practice. As it grew over the years to almost 2,000 members
it became evident that a central headquarters was required. A central administration was
established in Rugby with one full time administrator and two part-time
assistants. The office is open from Monday to Friday from 9.00am
- 5.00pm for general enquiries. Personal visits are by appointment
only.
The Society is a not-for-profit Limited
Company
The Society looked at the possibility of becoming a charity, however
this was not possible. This is because it was set up in a large part for
the benefits of its members rather than solely to protect the public by
offering a register of practitioners. The Society finally voted to
become a not-for-profit limited company and thus in legal
terms the Management Committee had to become a Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors
At any one time a maximum of nine Board members are
elected by members of the Society for a period of up to three years and
are accountable to the members. The Board have the responsibility of running
the numerous aspects of the Society varying from ethics and education to
research and budgets. As a not-for-profit limited company all the income
from membership fees, online shop sales etc. are put back into the
company in order to support the aims of the Society and its members.

Sub-committees and Lay Members
The Board is supported by a number of sub-committees. These are made up of Director's from the Board, other members of the Society
interested in a particular field and sometimes a lay member. The Society is looking for lay people to offer their expertise and
help. The Society is happy to discuss possibilities
with those who are interested, particularly in the area of ethics and in
establishing a regulatory body.
The Bigger Picture
The Society is going from strength to strength and is actively engaged
in the process of regulation and protection of the public. The Shiatsu
Society is involved in setting up the Shiatsu
Regulatory Forum to explore
these issues and was a founder member of the General
Shiatsu Council. The
Shiatsu Society is also a founding member of the European
Shiatsu Federation.
The Shiatsu Society is working towards getting Shiatsu recognised as a
stand-alone Complementary and/or Alternative Method of healthcare.
