The Codes of Conduct & Ethics and Guidelines for Practice
give the Society a professional framework for its members to adhere to.
The Codes lay out what the Society believes is appropriate behaviour and
practice for its members when dealing with clients, students and other
members of the Society. The Codes ensure that the general public
is protected by a high standard of professionalism.
Every member of the Shiatsu Society has to sign an annual declaration
stating that they will abide by the Code of Conduct & Ethics and Guidelines
for Practice. If you would like a copy of the codes please contact
us. The Codes can also be obtained from the Downloads
page.
The Codes cover:
- The safety and wellbeing of clients
- Professional competence of practitioners
- Working with children and people with mental incapacity
- Confidentiality
- Health & Safety
- Honourable relationships with other practitioners
- Inappropriate relationships with clients (whether emotional, sexual
or financial)
The codes also cover the same issues for teachers working with students
learning Shiatsu.
Please note: Although our codes are very thorough they
only cover Shiatsu practitioners who are members of the Shiatsu Society
(UK), which is one of several organisations representing practitioners
in the UK. At the moment there are no regulations in place to ensure
that practitioners have to be registered to a membership body in order
to practice

Complaints Procedure
The Society has a thorough and transparent complaints procedure for dealing
with complaints against its members. This procedure is available from the
Downloads page.
If you have a complaint:
- The first point of call is the Complaints Manager, Samantha Chadband,
who works in the Society’s office.
- Please telephone or e-mail the Complaints Manager (contact
us) to outline the nature of the complaint.
- The Complaints Manager will then arrange a time to contact you to discuss
the complaint and log it in the office. They will also the check
that the person being complained about (the respondent) is still a current
member of the Society.
- If the respondent is a member of the Society then the Complaints Manager
will forward you a Complaints Information Request Form for you to complete
with full details of complaint and provide you with a simple guide to
the complaints process.
- If the respondent is not a member of the Society then the Complaints
Manager will help you either:
a) contact the appropriate membership body for them, or,
b) if they are not a member or another body put you in touch with an organisation
who can help you with your complaint against the practitioner.
