Research Projects

Research into Shiatsu
There been a significant amount of international research done concerning Shiatsu (and acupressure, a modality within Shiatsu) as an effective healthcare intervention. However this different research results have tended to have not been integrated into a single body of knowledge. The Shiatsu Society is engaged in a systematic review of these various research projects and it is hoped that by the end of 2006 this review will be available to the Shiatsu community and beyond via this website.

The Shiatsu Society is a member of the European Shiatsu Federation (ESF) and there is a major pan-European research project underway that has been initiated by the ESF. This project follows on from an exploratory research project completed in 2002 and it is anticipated that results of this second phase will be available in 2007. To find out more see ESF Research.

Some useful information concerning research into Shiatsu in a clinical context is available by following the link on the left of this page, Shiatsu research. This includes Shiatsu being used to treat common conditions that include asthma, back problems, cancer, pulmonary obstruction, depression, headaches, bowel problems, palliative care, assisting pregnancy, joint pain and stress.

Case Studies

As well as a significant body of research available there is also a wealth of anecdotal evidence that illustrates the effectiveness of Shiatsu. Some of this is available in the form of case studies based on actual experience of professional Shiatsu practitioners.

Once again you are invited to follow the link on the left of this page to find out more, Shiatsu Case Studies. The case studies illustrate effective Shiatsu that includes working with conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, joint pain, asthma, back pain, migraines and IBS.

Shiatsu Society Sponsors NCT DVD

The Shiatsu Society is sponsoring a new DVD, produced by The National Childbirth Trust, showing birth as it has never been seen before. The film combines information and real life stories from real women – including top TV presenter and mother of three, Davina McCall, who tells her personal home birth story.

The new Happy Birth Day DVD is designed to show how women and their partners can help themselves to have the best birth possible. Featuring Alison Hammond, presenter on ITV’s This Morning, it follows two very different women and their midwives through pregnancy and birth, and shows how the choices they make about their care influence the birth they have and the way they feel about it.

The DVD provides parents-to-be with answers about what really makes a difference and why.  It explains the options available when making key decisions, such as how to choose where to give birth and who can provide support.  These, along with the other choices discussed, are known to have an effect on the sort of birth a woman has.  The DVD also discusses how to improve the chances of a straightforward birth.

As one of the 13 organisations sponsoring the DVD, the Shiatsu Society has produced a short advertisement, which appears on the DVD in between the documentary-style footage about how parents can prepare for the birth of their baby.
