2006 saw the emergence of a new website resource for the Shiatsu Society offering all the previous facilities plus discussion boards, availability of more information, member website-hosting and the potential for new services as we need them.

Two further significant developments took place in 2006. The first is the Society’s web-based discussion boards, the second is the ability for members to have their own websites hosted with the Shiatsu Society site.

SSUK Discussion Boards

It has never been easier for members of the Society to collaborate in the development of shiatsu in the UK. The discussion boards are a very important development and I encourage all members to use them constructively and creatively. We are a Society made up of individual members but through communication and collaboration the Society can be far greater than the sum of its parts. Any topic relevant to the Society and to Shiatsu can be discussed on the discussion boards, you can communicate and discuss things with other members of the Society from anywhere in the world, you can discover what others think and feel about things, make new connections with people and so on.

Many of us live and work separately. As a Society, and therefore as Shiatsu practitioners, we could benefit hugely from making the most of this facility. If you have access to a computer and to the internet, the discussion boards are not difficult to use. Like any new activity there can be new things to learn and new ways of doing things but I am confident that we can all manage this.

SSUK Members’ Websites

At Congress last year we launched www.shiatsudirectory.co.uk as a service for members to be able to advertise their shiatsu practice on the web through paying competitive rates for design, maintenance and hosting services. Crucially, through being linked to the Shiatsu Society website, members’ websites can rate highly in Google’s search result rankings (and with other popular search engines). This means that your site can be highly visible on the internet giving you the opportunity to gain more clients.

You can try this service out with a free, non-committal trial through www.shiatsudirectory.co.uk.

Even if you already have a website, you may wish to consider taking up this opportunity for a further shiatsu ‘microsite. Linking to your new shiatsudirectory site may well help to make your current site far more visible in search rankings and more accessible from the SSUK website. You may find that this investment soon pays for itself through new clients.

The Shiatsu Society Website Sub-Comittee

The website is a vital tool of communication. If you wish to influence the development of the website then please contact me, Tamsin, with a view to playing a role on the website sub-committee.

Five-Year Plan 2007 – 2011

  1. Another new site installed (if needed)
  2. Website facilities as needed by Shiatsu community, developing as appropriate
  3. All research results to be available easily and a flexible searchable database
  4. Website as valuable resource not only for members but also for researchers, health professionals and public
