THE ESSENTIAL BODYWORKER'S TOOLKIT
with DAN STRETTON. EDINBURGH 15th/16th May 2010 and NORTHAMPTON 22nd/23rd May 2010.
This new course focuses on mastering the skills that get to the heart of tension and pain, quickly, effectively and with minimum effort. I have used these to successfully grow my practice, whatever the economy. In these two days, you will:  Discover simple and powerful techniques that create pain-free muscle release, Learn how to powerfully contact and detox the organs, creating physical changes and addressing emotional blockages, Stop struggling and save your energy! Discover how to release years of pain and tension in MINUTES These are just some of the results past attendees have been getting using these techniques: “Shiatsu has moved on a notch for me Dan…e.g. a farmer …put up with lower back pain..with severe headaches.  GP suggested Amitriptylline! ONE, YES ONE shiatsu treatment with me and voila - no further headaches or lower back pain.  Bloody marvellous.  It just seemed to fall into place, I could see the physical misalignments and knew what I wanted to achieve.  It was a great feeling and the most competently conscious I have felt with shiatsu… thanks to you, Dan, you're an inspiration.” Deb, Essex. “I've been treating someone... for the past three weeks.  He's had a lot of falls …and broken bones over the years. His feedback to me today was that the few sessions he's had with me have done more than years of physio to release his 'bad' hip etc.” Liz, London. So if you’re truly ready to take your practice to the next level my advice is do not delay.  Last year my courses were sold out and places ARE limited. Visit  www.danstretton.com and book your place.

SHIATSU RESIDENTIAL
with Clifford Andrews - Relationships & Holograms.   Clifford Andrews writes: " '. I feel completely torn between my father and my mother.. can you help me with Shiatsu?' It was this unusual request from a client, and the subsequent improvised treatment which allowed me to stumble upon a whole new approach to treating complex relationship issues, and also led me to a new explanation for some aspects of our energy-work, using holograms".   This major breakthrough allows us directly to experience multiple diagnoses related to Relationship issues. Cliff has only started teaching the technique this year and already it is creating widespread international interest. This workshop will allow us to:   a.. Experience and treat multiple diagnoses, linked to relationship patterns b.. Explore a holographic model of memory and the energy field c.. Relate diagnoses to recurring life patterns. The first opportunity to experience this revolutionary new work in  the UK. Places are limited and this workshop is booking strongly,  so we advise early application to secure a place. A thorough  working knowledge of the Masunaga system is a requirement for  enrolment. Dates:   22nd April (7pm) to 25th April (4pm)

INSURANCE   Balens block scheme insurance forms have now been sent to all members who are currently insured with Balens.  If you have not received yours, or wish to now be insured with them, then please contact us for another copy.    Please note that cheques need to be made payable to 'Balens' but everything is returned here.  If you send your form and payment direct to Balens this will delay your insurance as they have to forward it back to us and we have to then send it back to them after processing it.

CPD
Now that CPD has been compulsory for a year we will shortly be randomly selecting full members asking for evidence of their CPD for 2009.  Please do not forward anything to the office until we request it from you.  We will only be contacting graduates and MRSS members that are on the public registers.

CAN STUDENTS CHARGE FOR TREATMENTS?
We receive many calls from students asking whether they can charge for treatments under our block insurance scheme with Balens. David Balen from Balens Ltd confirms the following:- "There is no bar on students charging for work done before qualification (not just case studies) but they have to make it clear to the client that they are not fully qualified and record this in the notes. Also, they shouldn’t charge the same as if they were fully qualified. Other than the usual rules about ensuring that all their work is discussed/supervised with their tutors, so they are not practising out on a limb, there are no other relevant restrictions." Here is the relevant section from your Balens policy:- n) in respect of any treatment given by any person who is not qualified in the treatment being undertaken except a) under the direct supervision of a qualified person or b) with the specific agreement of the insurer or c) for students case study work, or for other work prior to qualification being obtained, if deemed competent to do so by their school and providing they do not practice outside the scope of what they have been taught, and that regular supervision and/or ongoing case consultation/review for such cases is in place - students are to declare in advance that they are not qualified and may charge a fee provided this is a modest amount and evidently lower than an experienced and qualified therapist would normally charge.

CLEAN LANGUAGE ON RADIO 4!
Clean Language, a great way to ask questions which increase awareness of Ki, was featured on Radio 4’s Metaphors for Healing on 27 Oct. Dr Phil Hammond interviewed Penny Tompkins, one of the developers of Clean Language, on how her own “grinding, abrasive” back pain healed completely thanks to “Clean Questions” asked over a couple of sessions by one of her own students. He also talked to doctors, patients and therapists to find out how the use of metaphorical language in health care is increasingly accepted as a powerful aid to healing. According to the BBC, “the power of the right metaphor, long exploited in poetry, politics and marketing, is being increasingly recognized in health care, coaching and therapy, engaging the unconscious to activate self-healing”. Nick Pole’s BEYOND WORDS course is all about integrating Clean Language with Shiatsu, to help clients transform their own energy patterns. You can learn how to ask these wonderfully simple “zen questions” at: BRIGHTON, 14/15 Nov 09 LONDON, 28/29 Nov 09 BRISTOL, 17/18 April 2010 WARWICKSHIRE residential, 4-6 June 2010. Two “recession concession” places are available for the London course! Please email Nick if you need one. For a copy of his “Shiatsu and Clean Language” article, full course details and booking: nickpole@madasafish.com or call 0207 2865630. For more about Clean Language, see www.cleanchange.co.uk

SEIKI WEEKEND IN DEVON (NOVEMBER 2009) with Daniela Coronelli MrssT, PGDSE
This Seiki weekend will be taking place on the beautiful Dartington Estate, internationally renowned centre of excellence in the fields of art, music and ecology - close to Dartmoor and the South Devon coast. It will further expand on the individual and group work developed in the Seiki weekends and day workshops which Akinobu Kishi and Daniela have facilitated in the South West during the past five years. WITH SEIKI YOU CAN! 1. Imagine feeling totally at ease and connected to your client every time you give a shiatsu. 2. Consider the possibility of giving a full session in less time, yet being more effective. 3. Enhance your diagnostic skills by using the whole of your energetic field to pick up your client’s patterns. 4. Explore how spontaneous movement supports you and your clients in releasing toxin accumulation and in restoring vital Ki. 5. Let go further your tendencies of resistance, holding back and confusion, and expand the range and the number of your client base. 6. And more …….. Daniela Coronelli has, for several years, worked extensively with Akinobu Kishi, in Japan and in UK, and is passionate about the method and transformative effect Seiki  has on students and in her clinical practice. BEYOND WORDS...
Clean Language and Shiatsu with Nick Pole, MA, MRSS(T) . Learn how to ask very simple “Clean Questions” which help clients explore and transform their energy patterns, and expand their ideas about what Shiatsu can really do for them. This course is about how you and your client communicate verbally and non-verbally through words and Ki, and offers some amazingly useful insights into how your clients’ metaphors and gestures can be unconscious signals giving you direct diagnostic information. A very practical course, with plenty of shiatsu, and an emphasis on coaching rather than teaching as you rapidly learn to use the material in your own way. In a very supportive atmosphere and with a small group, you will experience for yourself how you can deal with deep-rooted issues that seem hard to shift. The course includes Qi Gong and a bit of poetry to help you get to the heart of your relationship with your clients. “This course exceeded my expectations. The way you dealt with real clients where real problems were resolved was inspirational.” Roger Upton, MRSS Stratford-upon-Avon course, Dec 2008 . “The best thing we have run for several years for our staff, and very enjoyable too.” Susanna Dowie, Principal, London College of Traditional Acupuncture . BRIGHTON, 14/15 Nov 09 LONDON, 28/29 Nov 09 BRISTOL, 17/18 April 2010 WARWICKSHIRE residential, 4-6 June 2010 For a copy of Nick’s article “Shiatsu and Clean Language”, full course details and booking: nickpole@madasafish.com For more about Clean Language, see www.cleanchange.co.uk

PRACTICAL TCM COURSE: PRACTICAL TCM FOR SHIATSU PRACTITIONERS
DATES:  WEDS 28TH OCTOBER, WEDS 25TH NOVEMBER WEDS 13TH JANUARY, WEDS 10TH FEBRUARY
TUTOR:  Mike Potter MSc, LicAc, DipCHM, MBacC, MRCHM VENUE:  Devon School of Shiatsu, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 6ND INTRODUCTION The purpose of this course will be to introduce the basic principles of TCM in a practical context for graduate practitioners of Shiatsu. Rather than introducing the functions and pathologies of each Zangfu/meridian system in isolation, we propose to group them around common energetic and therapeutic themes, looking at their synergistic relationships.   Each day will commence with a presentation (following a review of the previous session) which will be reinforced by case history problem solving exercises.  The case histories will contextualise the practical demonstration and practice of moxa, cupping and body work techniques will complete each session. MIKE POTTER BIOGRAPHY
Michael Potter has been practising Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal medicine and Shiatsu for 27 years, having studied in Japan, China and USA.  He holds an MSc in Educational Studies and has been teaching for 20 years.  He currently lectures at Westminster University on the MSc Chinese Herbal Medicine course and runs a private practice in Devon. Over a four day period we propose to introduce: 1.  Spleen, Lungs, Stomach & Large Intestine & After Heaven Qi This will examine Qi Transformation as well as the processes of respiration, digestion and elimination.  The pathological processes of Qi Stagnation, Dampness & Phlegm will be explored. 2.  Lungs (& Spleen) & Kidneys/Bladder, Fluid Metabolism and the relationship between After Heaven Qi (Spleen & Lungs) and Before Heaven Qi (Kidneys) Within this relationship, we shall examine the way in which the body defends itself against external pathological invasion (immune system).  In this Session, we shall also look at the actions of the points of Command according to the 'Classic of Difficult Issues'. 3.  Heart, Liver & Kidneys The focus of this session will be the production and circulation of Xue (blood).  As Blood is the Fluid of the Heart, the day will also focus around common emotional disorders.  The pathological processes involving blood; blood deficiency, blood stagnation and heat in the blood. 4.  The Transformation Cycle: Liver, Pericardium, Gall Bladder & San Jiao (Triple Heater) This session will examine the uniqueness of each of these energetic systems, enabling participants to better understand their use in a therapeutic context.

SHIATSU WEBSITE The inspire-shiatsu website has now gone through its consultation and feedback stage and will be published under the address www.shiatsuinfo.org from 16th October. This website is designed to be something to which you can refer doctors or clients for more information about Shiatsu. The process of supporting people to promote Shiatsu locally, and the discussion group for that purpose, which was on the consultation site, will not be continuing because the forthcoming revamp of the Shiatsu Society's website will include this functionality.

EXPERIENTIAL TEACHING Experiencing anatomy and energy directly and how to facilitate it in others.  A teachers training course with Bill Palmer. These workshops, one afternoon a month, are designed for trainee and practicing teachers but can also be taken as self-exploration classes. The course will demonstrate how to teach 'experientially'. This means that, instead of teaching about Anatomy, Meridians and Organs theoretically, you can facilitate students to feel these things inwardly and directly. This transforms dry theoretical teaching into something alive and inspiring. It also gives students a first hand relationship with energy, which allows them to work more spontaneously, creatively and intuitively. Each afternoon workshop will focus on a facet of Experiential Teaching e.g.:    1. Transforming narrative into sensation    2. Experiential Anatomy - how to directly sense inner organs and  the movement of inner structure.    3. Experiencing the Meridians through movement    4. Using movement  and visualisation to sense energy disconnections    5. Using breath to sense and embody Ki. When and where : Wednesdays  monthly at the British School of Shiatsu-Do, Unit 3, Thane Works, Thane Villas, London N7 7NU. Dates: Nov 18th, Dec 16th, Jan 13th, Feb 10th, Mar 17th and April 14th. All days will be from 1pm - 5pm. Cost:£240. A few low income places will be allocated if more than 12 people sign up. Booking: Email bill@seed.org or phone 01225 580085 or book online at http://www.seed.org/teaching
