POSTERS FOR MEMBERS
Have you anything planned for the European Shiatsu Week yet? 20th to 26th September. If you have, and haven't advised us of it yet please do so as soon as possible as we have a full page advertorial in this months Healthy (Holland & Barrett) magazine. Only a few members have responded so far and we have been inundated at the office by members of the public requesting details of special offers and events that you will be offering during the week. We will also advertise your offers to the media for you.
Please see http://www.shiatsusociety.org/members/home.shtml#esweek if you need some ideas. Why not get together with other practitioners or schools in your area? We have also printed a poster advertising the week which we will send free of charge to all members who are doing something to promote Shiatsu during the week. You can place these in your clinics, local libraries, shops, health stores, gyms, front windows etc.

THERAPIST SUPPORT GROUP
I am starting a Therapist Support Group on Wednesday 1st Sept, 7-9pm, £5 each, as a result of requests from different therapists. This will be multi-therapies so hopefully I'll be able to spread the Shiatsu word. I hope some Shiatsu students/practitioners might be interested in attending. I'll tailor the evening to those who attend and hopefully set up regular evenings / full day workshops dependent upon people's wishes etc. Venue: 14 Fairlawns, Mansfield, Notts, NG18 3EP. Contact: Julie Tasker email Julie_Tasker@hotmail.com 07947 102 645 or 01623 478050 Anyone welcome - I will tailor the evening to those present so please let me know any particular things you would like to get from attending the Group.

SHIATSU IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM
I am working on developing a programme to take Shiatsu to our Education system - similar to the Massage In Schools Programme I've been involved with recently. I'm hoping this will involve a creative and fun process to raise children's awareness to their energy systems so including work with Meridians and Elements as well as some safe Shiatsu techniques. Something like 'Social Shiatsu for Schools/Students with Respectful Touch' and 'Self-Help Shiatsu for Schools/Students'. Does anyone know of any similar work happening/has happened in the past? I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to start applying for grants so if anyone has any helpful advice etc please email me. I intend approaching my local Academy Secondary School as I have heard they aren't so strictly confined curriculum-wise. Julie Tasker, julie_tasker@hotmail.com

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MOVEMENT SHIATSU
This one year course aims to develop your authority as a practitioner. To synthesise theory and practice and to allow you to be really creative in your work. The first residential of this course (September 16th – 19th in Dorset) can be taken without commitment to the rest of the course. After this residential there are three weekends in Bath (Nov, Jan and March) and then a final residential in May. Movement Shiatsu focuses in working with chronic conditions, and sees them as opportunities for development rather than illness to be ‘cured’. You will learn to use your expertise to teach clients how to be aware of themselves and to change their patterns. The group work will give you an opportunity to explore yourself deeply and to lose the fear of contacting clients’ pain. The experimental and experiential style of the work will help you to be more spontaneous and interactive in your work. Finally, you will learn the way in which meridians guide the development of movement in babies and how they are the pathways along which we learn to inhabit our bodies. This viewpoint allows you to be a teacher to your clients, teaching them how to be embodied and how to be more experimental and creative in their lives. For more details go to: http://www.seed.org/postgrad. To enquire or book on this course, please email courses@seed.org or fill out the form on the above web-page.

EUROPEAN SHIATSU WEEK
The European Shiatsu week will be 20th to 26th September this year.  The Society will be contacting all the major media, TV, newspapers, magazines etc.  There will also be a full page colour advertorial in the August issue of Healthy (Holland and Barrett) magazine.  We now need to have details from members on what they will be doing during the week to promote Shiatsu and themselves as the public will start asking for this information.   Some ideas: discounted or free treatments, open days, exhibitions, putting up posters, circulating leaflets, displays in libraries, tasters in local Boots stores, talks to local community groups, interviews/articles for your local media etc.   For more information please visit http://www.shiatsusociety.org/members/home.shtml#esweek   If we all work together then we can get Shiatsu out there!  However small a contribution, please do try to do something during the week.  Maybe team up with other practitioners in your area.  Contact your local school and/or support groups.   NEW WEBSITE   We are pleased to confirm that the web designers have now started work on our new website.  This will be available shortly.

TREATMENT ROOM
Treatment room space available in Gt Yarmouth.  If you are looking to expand into the Great Yarmouth area there are spaces to rent at the Fastolff Wellness Clinic. Please contact Frankie Holman on 07880 576164 or rivendell@live.co.uk

SCAM - BEWARE!
It appears that some of our members are being contacted by a Platform Emergency Services magazine asking them to advertise in it for £200.  Please be aware that this is a scam.  We have reported this to Trading Standards who are currently investigating.   See http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/CIB/scams.htm for further information as they seem to be operating under several different names.

NORTH SOMERSET MEETING
The North Somerset support group met again on Tuesday 20th July 7.30pm-9.30pm in Weston Super Mare at Mary's house. One member had attended the Michael Rose course 'Touching the Essence' at the Devon School of Shiatsu. She shared with us her experience of it and she wants to thank all the attendees for being so friendly and approachable. We then put our heads together to discuss treatment methods for 2 clients we have. The first case involved self-harm and damaging relationships, the cause of which may be very deep rooted and the treatment may be long term. The energy patterns were complicated and very changeable. The second case was of sciatica, and the suggested treatment was more points and meridian based, with the diagnosis being an obstruction of Qi flow caused by a repetative action. Bl 23, 36, 37, 40, 57 and GB 30 and 31 were recommended along with some deep work using the breath.
The next meeting is Tuesday 21st September 7.30. Please email Mary on macbeckett@tiscali.co.uk or Amy on angel_of_the_sw@hotmail.com for more details.

SHIATSU LINK WALES
I'm very happy and excited to introduce Shiatsu Link Wales - a support network linking practitioners, facilitating workshops and promoting Shiatsu in Wales. Our first workshop will be on 'Mindfulness in the Shiatsu Form' led by Chris Sheehan on October 9th 2010 and is open to all students and practitioners.
Chis will introduce basic exercises to relax, open and still the body and mind in order to improve the quality of being, touch and support in the shiatsu practise. also introducing the 'Tai-Ji 5 Element Form'. this is a short sequence of flowing movements that give in a light and playful way, a direct experience of the dance of elements within us. Chris Sheehan has trained extensively in Zen and mindfulness meditation with Meditation Master John Garrie Roshi. His unique teaching in freedom, using breath, relaxation and posture to bring us to the immediacy of the moment, forms the basis of Tai-Ji and Healing. He trained and developed his skills in Healing Shiatsu with Sonia Moriceau.
The venue is a beautiful straw bale shelter with a log fire set in a diverse woodland at Blaen Y Wern, Carmathenshire. The day runs from 10am to 5pm, the cost is £50 and students may receive a 10% discount. Please bring a packed lunch to share. VETTING AND BARRING SCHEME
Our new government have put this new scheme on hold to reassess the situation.  The isa-gov website states:   In its recent document ‘The Coalition: Our programme for government’, the Government set out its aim to ‘review the criminal records and vetting and barring regime and scale it back to common sense levels’.  In order to deliver this promise and carry out the remodelling, the Vetting and Barring Scheme will be halted. The first phase of registration was due to commence on 26 July 2010.
Although the Scheme is halted whilst the Government undertakes its review, new safeguarding regulations introduced in October 2009 continue to apply

THE TABLE SHIATSU WORKSHOP
LONDON 9/10th OCTOBER 2010.  Cost £135 Now in it's seventh year this course has helped hundreds of students discover how brilliant doing shiatsu on a treatment couch can be. What are the benefits of working on a Table? *       Unlike working on a futon, Table work allows you to use the strength and stability of your legs to give your hands a strong, grounded quality. Table work also involves the whole of your body and the practitioner can experience the treatment as a dance or a Tai Qi session. By being able to move quickly around the table when needed this work can be very dynamic and releasing. Also, by being able to sit on the table or on a chair the additional comfort can make slow, Yin treatments very easy to deliver. Other benefits include: Being able to work in situations where there is only room for a table · Being able to offer vulnerable or elderly clients the easier option of a table · Treatments tend to be less tiring than futon sessions · Table work can be less aggravating for injuries or physical limitations. You will learn over 200 techniques and 10 principles of Movement that will inform how you move around the the table. You will learn to work in all the major positions with both Yang and Yin styles. About Andrew Staib B.A, MRSS(T): Andrew qualified in 1996 and teaches for various shiatsu schools. He is passionate about Table Shiatsu as switching to a treatment couch saved his career. In 2006 he made the Table Shiatsu DVD, a two and a half hour comprehensive demonstration of his work, which is still selling well today. He has taught the Table Shiatsu workshop throughout the UK and Europe and they are well known for being fun as well as inspirational. For bookings contact Andrew on 07880742977 andrewstaibuk@yahoo.co.uk Or go to www.tableshiatsu.com

BANNATYNE LEISURE
Shiatsu offered at Bannatyne Leisure and Spa Group. I have noticed Shiatsu is on the price list of treatments offered at my local Bannatyne's Leisure and Spa Club.  However they do not have a Shiatsu Practitioner actually at their Mansfield club.  Once I am an official Graduate I will be able to approach them and hope to offer Shiatsu there from September 2010 initially for half a day per week.  I gather they have phased introductory rates to help support practitioners as they get established.    I would love to hear from any other Shiatsu Practitioners offering Shiatsu at a Bannatyne's Club so please email me via the Shiatsu Society office.    How about offering Shiatsu at your local Banntyne's?  If you have a Bannatyne's near you, please approach them and offer to help them fulfill the treatments included on their price list whilst also helping to get Shiatsu known to more people.  The best form of advertisement for the whole of the Shiatsu Community is word-of-mouth.    Julie Tasker julie_tasker@hotmail.com

RECEIVING THE ENEWS?
We have recently found that a few members have not been receiving the enews.  It hs been discovered that the enews is going into their spam box on the server (not the spam folder on the computer).   To access the email they have had to log into their email account on their email providers website and lowered the security to allow the email through.  We send the enews in bulk to many members so some computers will recognise it as spam unfortunately.   Should you know of a member who this is happening to can you please ask them to check their spam folder online and security settings.

VALUE OF LOCAL SUPPORT GROUPS
Are you an active member of your local peer support group?  If not, why not?  Read the following from members Amy Chandler and Hannah Mackay and just see how beneficial and supportive they can be.  Earn CPD points also! "On Tuesday 25th May the North Somerset/Somerset support group met in Cheddar 7.30-9.30pm. Those who attended the AGM shared their thoughts and experience of it with the group. We also talked about job possibilities, new beginnings and endings, including working as Shiatsu Therapists in Care Homes and Qi Gong Teachers in prisons - some very interesting job roles. We thoroughly enjoyed demonstrating and sharing Barefoot Shiatsu techniques and we practiced giving Shiatsu in pairs to one receiver - a double dose of Shiatsu! We explored the benefits of this double-Shiatsu in half the time, wondering whether it would be successful in busy cities where people don't have the time/ don't want to make time for single whole sessions. Perhaps the adaptations of Shiatsu are endless... Our next meeting is 20th July 7.30pm in Weston Super Mare." Call Amy on 07787 765795 to book.  For details of your local support groups see http://www.shiatsusociety.org/members/regional.shtml

I wanted to let you know about the Manchester Shiatsu Practitioners' Circle, which we started this year. It is open to all practitioners who have completed their 3 year training. We have some people attending who are fairly newly qualified, and some who are old hands. It's an open group, so you don't have to come to every meeting.  We are meeting 4 times a year; at the moment we have decided to focus each session on an element. Our Spring meeting was on Wood, and was great (I thought!). The next session, in July, will be on Fire; people might like to share exercises, experiences, techniques, knowledge or questions they have about the Fire element and its meridians. We will celebrate our shiatsu practices, do some shiatsu swaps and discuss ways in which we can develop. If you have something you would like to offer, or something you would like to receive, let me know and we’ll try to incorporate it.
Where:  Bodywise, in Central Manchester (walking distance from Piccadilly and Victoria stations if you're coming by public transport). When: Monday 12th July 2010 and Saturday 16th October 2010, 10am – 1pm, (we may go for lunch in cafe afterwards) Cost:      £5 to cover room hire. If you'd like to come along you'd be very welcome. You can give me a ring on 0161 8816184 for more information, or e-mail hannahmackay@hotmail.com.

SHIATSU SURVEY
You may or may not be aware that there is quite a lot of internet activity and discussion going on at the moment about Shiatsu and the survey below has been designed to gauge client opinions of what Shiatsu means (or doesn't mean) to them. This information will then be collated by Tony and we will use it to collaborate on a new Shiatsu 'Manifesto' based on what our clients and potential clients would like.   It has been designed by Tony Brown of Worthing Shiatsu in conjunction with Gina Loree Marks of Grace In Gravity (in USA), with input from a group of other practitioners who have all been connected on line for several months.   Anyone can get involved in this and it would really help to get as many clients feeding back as possible. If you feel happy to be involved, please would you email your clients and give them the link below, which will take them to the survey page and to Tony's website which explains further.  http://worthingshiatsu.co.uk/shiatsu-survey/

RESIDENTIAL COURSE
“A TRIP AROUND THE BODY” -  RESIDENTIAL COURSE IN  WEST WALES WITH CAROLA BERESFORD-COOKE,  19-23 July. Shiatsu is superb energy work, but it is easy to forget that it is also superb bodywork.  The Shiatsu touch, varying from solidly supportive through penetrating to liberating, is a joy to give and receive. Shiatsu techniques, enriched by centuries of contact with other therapies from both East and West, can tackle most structural problems.  When we add the ”inner techniques” which Shiatsu training has refined and developed  through its long history we have an approach to the mind and spirit through the physical body which is unparalleled. This course explores some of these possibilities.  We will be Re-acquainting ourselves with the simple yet profound nature of basic Shiatsu touch , Reducing the tyranny of the “tramline” approach to meridians, Developing the listening skills in our own bodies, Exploring each part of the body in detail, Sharing a wide range of techniques and discussing when best to use them. An intensely practical workshop, but extensively supported by handouts and notes as well as class discussion.  We will not be focusing on meridians and points, but they will obviously be referred to where relevant, and if anyone wants to remind themselves of specific locations of either there will be the opportunity. The course is suitable for anyone with basic competence in Shiatsu or more, from second year to post graduate. Cost £280 all inclusive. Email  carolabc@talktalk.net for further information/booking details

19th June 2010

We know we have some very creative members amongst ourselves and are inviting members to design a new modern, eye catching logo for the Society.  We would like to see a small picture, Shiatsu Society text and also a tag line.    If you are interested in submitting a design then please forward by 27th June.   We look forward to receiving your designs.

4th June 2010

NEW IMAGE
We are looking at creating a new eye catching and more modern logo for the Society and would love members to be involved with this new image.  We are looking at something that possibly has the Shiatsu Society on, a graphic and maybe a tag line.    Are you creative?  Would you like to send in a design for us to look at?  If so, we would welcome your contributions by 18th June.

NEW WEBSITE
We are looking for volunteers to be part of a group that will oversee the content of the new website.  Are you interested in being part of this exciting new time?  It will involve looking at text provided for the site to ensure the grammar is correct and it follows the style sheet.  If so, please do let us know.

SCAM - BEWARE!
It appears that some of our members are being contacted by a Platform Emergency Services magazine asking them to advertise in it for £200.  Please be aware that this is a scam.  We have reported this to Trading Standards who are currently investigating.   See http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/CIB/scams.htm for further information.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MOVEMENT SHIATSU
with Bill Palmer. This one year course aims to develop your Shiatsu through developing yourself, your quality of touch and a detailed knowledge of how Qi and Anatomy are intertwined.  Participants recommend it by coming back and doing it several times, feeling that the group and the focus on experiential awareness supports their professional practice and development. Its aims are:
1) To help you integrate intellect and intuition in Shiatsu practice and to find your OWN authority
2) To give practical tools for working with chronic conditions and conditions that are emotional but can be processed through the body. 3) To go deeper into your own awareness of yourself. Bill says of this course: "My central belief is that the effectiveness of Shiatsu comes from the quality of contact between practitioner and client. The core of the course is the development of your own energy awareness, so that you know it from the inside, rather than the theory. We use group work, movement experiments, exercise and voice work to directly experience energy through the body and explore ourselves deeply so that clients can feel that we are helping them with authority. NEW OFFICE!
The Society is pleased to announce that we are moving to new larger, but cheaper, premises on 28th May. This is an exciting time as the new offices will mean we have a spare room which can be used as a clinic room and a meeting room. Once settled in, we will be contacting members to see who is interested in working at the clinic with us so please keep your eyes open for that. The offices will still be in Rugby. Details:- Address - we will be keeping our P O Box for all correspondence. Telephone number - we are keeping our 0845 number. For those wanting a landline the new number is 01788 547900. Fax number - new - 01788 547111 Email/web - remaining the same. We do not anticipate any disruption to the office service that week but please do bear with us should there be any unexpected hiccups and we take a little longer coming back to you than usual.

WHAT IS CPD?
Several practitioners are telling us that they are concerned they cannot adhere to the CPD guidelines as they cannot afford expensive courses. We have devised a list of CPD activities for you - see attached. You will see there are lots of options and most of them are free. CPD is about developing you as a person and your practice - this does not have to involve expensive workshops. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you need further guidance. You may also like to have a mentor which is also free. A list of mentors can be found at http://www.shiatsusociety.org/members/mentoring/mentors_details.shtml Mentoring counts as CPD too!

EMAIL ADDRESS
Please note that our email address is admin@shiatsusociety.org. It seems that some members are using admin@shiatsu.org so we are not getting their emails. Can you please ensure that you have our correct address in your address books.

FIH CLOSES
Statement from FIH:- The Trustees of The Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health have decided to close the charity. Whilst the closure has been planned for many months and is part of an agreed strategy, the Trustees have brought forward the closure timetable as a result of a fraud investigation at the charity. The Trustees feel that The Foundation has achieved its key objective of promoting the use of integrated health. Since The Foundation was set up in 1993, integrated health has become part of the mainstream healthcare agenda, with over half a million patients using complementary therapies each year, alongside conventional medicine. From 2000-2007, at the request of the Department of Health, The Foundation ran a regulation programme which resulted in the creation, in 2008, of an independent self-regulatory body for complementary therapy, called the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council. On 1st April 2010, the Secretary of State for Health announced plans to introduce statutory regulation for herbalists and to consider the equivalent for acupuncture. The Trustees believe that the best way of promoting integrated healthcare in the future is through the networks of specialist practitioners which the charity has helped to establish. These networks have brought together specialists and proponents of integrated healthcare, such as doctors, nurses, clinicians, consultants, scientists and students.
Response from the Regulator, CNHC:- I can absolutely confirm that the very regrettable issues surrounding the closure of FIH and the arrest of a previous member of staff do not have an impact on CNHC. CNHC has been totally in dependant of FIH since January 2008 and we continue to prosper and grow with 2,538 registrants (as of today) on the CNHC register. We as you know have the confidence of the Department of Health (DH) and will be meeting them next week to discuss the previous Secretary of State for Health’s statement that CNHC should register Traditional Chinese Medicine and Herbal Medicine. I hope you are reassured that the above represents a bouyent rather than a sinking organisation. Maggie Dunn, Chair
REMEMBER: The early bird concession for Society members wishing to join the CNHC ends on 17th May! Register now to receive your discount. Forms can be found at http://www.shiatsusociety.org/members/downloads.shtml#regulation
