Tamsin Grainger MRSS(T) : Chair, Mentoring & External Marketing
I was working as a Community Dance Worker and teacher in Bristol, when 3 separate people suggested I try a Shiatsu session. I loved it - it felt like I was being danced. When a long-term serious health problem was practically eliminated in 2 sessions, I had immediate personal proof of the power of Shiatsu.
I have been working as a Shiatsu practitioner since 1992 (MRSS in1995), specialising in pregnancy and with children. I am also a teacher (‘T’ in 2003), running The Shiatsu School Edinburgh, and adult evening classes. I was involved in the pilot project for bringing MRSS into the Schools, and am proud to say that these graduates have recently become MRSS through the new route. I also enjoy teaching baby-shiatsu classes (since the birth of my second daughter in 1995), and set up The Shiatsu Place this year to help students, graduates and new practitioners build up a client base.
I have been a member of The Shiatsu Society since 1990, and am interested in giving back some support and energy. My responsibilities of over-seeing mentoring, CPD, t/T guidelines, and the new role of Congress Co-ordinator, Interactivity, mean that I am going to be working very closely with Shiatsu Society members, and I welcome much cross-fertilisation of ideas and increased communication.

Home MRSS(T) : ESF, Congress/AGM, CPD
I began studying Shiatsu in the eighties and took the MRSS in 1992
after I had already been assisting and teaching for a few years, as I have
been involved in teaching various subjects since 1977. I studied
in a small school, which had a unique approach to Shiatsu, where movement
and Ki development were an essential part of the syllabus.
I
then became a member of the Assessment Pool in 1997 and an Assessment Co-ordinator
in 1999, as well as being part of the Assessment Panel. In 2000 I set up
my own school starting the Ealing School of Shiatsu in order to continue
creating a style where movement is an essential part of a course to study
Shiatsu. Now using movements inspired by SpiralDance the focus is
on self-development with exploring and expressing the various dynamics
of Ki in addition to the more traditional Shiatsu studies. My approach
to Shiatsu is strongly influenced by both western dance and eastern martial
arts (including meditation), as I feel movement is essential to understanding
energy and the constant development of the practitioner’s Ki is fundamental
to Shiatsu.
I also qualified in acupuncture in 1997 and I am currently
studying Kinesiology. Having been involved in alternative practices
for over 30 years I often come from a non-establishment point of view which
is useful if only to play the devil’s advocate. I am particularly
interested in promoting the awareness of Shiatsu at the same time as maintaining
/ improving its standards, as I feel Shiatsu is one of the most natural
treatments in the world and everybody can benefit from both giving and
receiving it.

Philip Brown : Treasurer
Hello. I’m studying Shiatsu at the Bristol School. I offered to stand for election to join The Shiatsu Society’s Board of Directors, specifically to fill the finance role as Treasurer.
Some may be surprised that I am volunteering my services when I only came to Shiatsu recently. However, as a new student it is very real to me how important The Shiatsu Society is. It helped me understand how I might bring Shiatsu into my life, and its professionalism gave me confidence that this was a responsibly established field. So in return, and to contribute to that ongoing work, I am stepping forward.
My background is in business management, with twenty years experience now. For those of you who like qualifications I have a Masters Degree in Business, which includes finance. I also have three years recent experience as a Director running a similar sized music therapy charity.
From that work I know the finance role is not always the most popular! However while others give the lead on the development of shiatsu, we can probably recognise that behind the scenes a well managed finance function is key to ensuring the ongoing success of the Society. At present there is a great team doing just that, and working alongside them would be a pleasure.

Rochelle Wilson : Newsletter, Website & Internal Communications
I am a 3rd year student looking forward to qualifying summer '09. This is a great opportunity for me to offer skills and experience to my professional body at an exciting time when there is a real prospect of official recognition of shiatsu by the Complementary And Natural Healthcare Council.
I bring with me skills gained during my first career as a newspaper and broadcast journalist. They include the ability to work accurately to deadlines, writing in a clear and accessible style, communicating with people at all levels, and computer skills.
Latterly, I have been self-employed, teaching Chi Kung and T’ai Chi with a special emphasis on taking this joyous practice to people who are ill or disabled. I was a member of the Steering Group of the T’ai Chi and Chi Kung for Health at a time when we so sought accreditation to help us take our art to NHS patients. I am looking forward to playing a part in taking the Shiatsu Society forward so that we can bring our therapy to more of the people who need it, regardless of their ability to pay.

Scanlon MRSS: Vice Chair, Rules and Regulations & Education
I discovered Shiatsu whilst working as a behavioural ecologist in Brazil
in the late 1980s. I gradually explored Shiatsu further, graduating
from the British School of Shiatsu-Do in 1996, and joining the Shiatsu
Society Register in 1997 I based my practice - the Shiatsu Health
Centre - in Findhorn in Scotland until 2000. Since then, I have run
my practice from Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.
I am interested in being involved with nurturing Shiatsu in our present
context of professionalisation and regulation. I am keen to support
the development of good practice, whilst keeping flexibility to trust that
we each know what we need to do to develop appropriately. I have
a long connection with The Open University, and presently teach for their
Health Studies degree, in particular the course Perspectives on Complementary
and Alternative Medicine.
I joined the Board in November 2005, when I took on responsibility for the
Education Area. During the last year, I have been learning about the
different issues involved. I have overseen the re-ratification of the
theory exams of the Shiatsu Schools, and in June 2006 begun the ratification
of practical assessment approved at the AGM last year. I am keen to
facilitate the continuing process of developing our practice and teaching
qualifications so that they are useful to the practitioner/teacher and respected
in the wider community. I welcome contact if you have a view or would
like to contribute to this area.

Elizabeth
Davies : Political, Research and Ethics
I am a second year student of the Shiatsu College, and am in the process
of retiring from main-stream work. I have a PhD from University of Brighton
(1993) for experimental research in bioelectromagnetics, exploring the
effects of very weak low frequency magnetic fields on living cells. I investigated
the therapeutic use of such fields in orthopaedics, and the possible health
effects of magnetic fields associated with mains electricity in the home
and environment. I have also been involved in the development of a diagnostic
technique using low frequency electromagnetic fields.
My deep interest
is in understanding the mechanism of interaction of subtle fields with
living systems. I am especially interested in exploring field effects in
Shiatsu healing work, and plan to initiate some experimental work in monitoring
these effects as part of the Research Sub-Committee, in the next year.
I
hope that my role as representative to the Shiatsu Regulation Group will develop to enable Shiatsu
to be recognised by the NHS, along with other energy healing modalitites,
in the next few years, so that it will be accessible to all who may benefit.
