Shiatsu Society Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – Welcome

CPD BECAME COMPULSORY FOR ALL GRADUATES AND MRSS ON THE PUBLIC LISTS / REGISTERS FROM 1ST JANUARY 2009

All members of the public register / list have been sent a template CPD form to complete but please do NOT return these to the office. We will be randomly contacting members to see their CPD files.

CPD is an important issue for the Shiatsu Society, particularly as the profession becomes more regulated. Many complementary therapy regulating bodies now require CPD, and the Society set up a voluntary CPD reporting scheme for graduates and MRSS practitioners in 2007 and 2008. All the respondants found the initial thought daunting but when they came to complete their forms showing what CPD they had been doing they found they were doing way over and above what was required anyway.

Want to be involved? We are looking for members to join the CPD sub committee. Please let us know if you are interested. It will involve a one hour teleconference about once a month.

Background

It was at the 2006 AGM that the introduction of voluntary CPD for Graduates and MRSS practitioners was voted in. We asked you to record your CPD in preparation for the future proposal at the 2008 AGM where we expected CPD to become compulsory. See the downloads page for further guidelines and form

We have chosen to adopt the Shiatsu Regulatory Group's CPD process so that members who wish to join the Regulators Register as well as the Society will not have to complete two seperate schemes. In short, all members who wish to appear on the public register or list will have to undertaken CPD. Most activities are valued at one point per one hour but some such as research earn a lot more. You will be required to obtain a minimum of 45 points over 3 years which can be carried over but you must have a minimum of 7 per annum. For a copy of the full guidelines please visit the downloads page.

CPD 5-YEAR PLAN (2007-2011):

  1. Now voted for by the members, we plan to implement the new CPD framework including administration, reporting system and member support. Working in conjunction with Catherine Scanlon, Education Director, Samantha Haywood and the Administration team.
  2. Supporting Shiatsu Society members' in successfully recording and reporting their CPD activities and providing advice on how to ensure that CPD targets are achievable and easy to maintain.
